Widestream Homepage Project Blog  Yet another download manager
By Basil Voronkov at 2009-04-03
While browsing the web I found one program, a download accelerator, that was looking pretty familiar. I spent a couple of minutes looking at the following picture trying to understand what WideStream screenshot is doing here. It took me some time to understand that this is not WideStream anymore but another peace of software called Youtube Video Captor.
You can read about this original program here. The last software catalogue even rated it 5 stars.
Of course I downloaded this program to see how many differences from WideStream I can find. I was able to discover the very first - and pretty serious one - during the installation. As a matter of fact Youtube Video Capture is released under GNU GPL (when WideStream as you know uses Artistic License 2.0). In other words this is a GPL program that restricts to use its code in the programs that are released under other licenses and is "compiled" in its turn from the sources released under Artistic License. Oh, brave new world!
I have finally installed and ran this program. Another difference - a different icon and a caption. Than instead of WideStream community link in the Help menu there are a couple of links in the "download torrents anonymously" style. And of course an "About" dialog with a different design and a big fancy banner. That was all. WideStream after operation.
To summarize I am really glad that people are inspired by WideStream and try to create their own programs. But the whole idea of open source is not to change labels and a banner in order to generate a new software but to use an existing code to build your own.
As for Youtube Video Captor I'd recommend to use the original.
